Electric vehicles produced by major auto manufacturers must meet all the same safety standards as conventional vehicles. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration establish these requirements.

With more and more EVs on the road the safety of EVs is being closely studied. To date, findings are positive and have shown that several EV features maximize safety. For example, EVs tend to have a lower center of gravity that makes them less likely to roll over. EVs have less potential for major fires or explosions. And the body construction and durability of EVs enhance vehicle safety in a collision.

The entire design of EVs and their components has been focused on maximizing safety, including meeting all electrical and safety standards set by the National Electrical Code, the Society of Automotive Engineers and other safety organizations such as the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Working Council (IWC). The performance of EV charging equipment is tested rigorously by independent sources such as Underwriters Laboratories. The end result is that driving and charging an EV is as safe as driving any type of vehicle in any type of weather, at any time of day.

Fossil-fuel vehicles have a great impact on emission of greenhouse and polluting gases into the atmosphere and the occurrence of global warming. Electric vehicles do not exhaust our systems and provide an opportunity to increase air quality and decrease noise pollution.

Orientation towards renewable energy sources in electricity production, and efficient energy use of electric vehicles proves that the future of transportation is electric vehicles.

Global Warming

Global Warming is the increase of earth’s average surface temperature due to effect of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which trap heat that would otherwise escape from Earth. This is a type of greenhouse effect.

Is global warming, caused by human activity, even remotely plausible?

The first 6 miles or so of the atmosphere mostly influences earth’s climate. This is really a very thin layer if you think about it. In the book The End of Nature, author Bill McKibbin tells of walking three miles to from his cabin in the Adirondack’s to buy food. Afterwards, he realized that on this short journey he had traveled a distance equal to that of the layer of the atmosphere where almost all the action of our climate is contained. In fact, if you were to view Earth from space, the principle part of the atmosphere would only be about as thick as the skin on an onion! Realizing this makes it more plausible to suppose that human beings can change the climate. A look at the amount of greenhouse gases we are spewing into the atmosphere (see below) makes it even more plausible.

What are the Greenhouse Gases?

Why is this? There are two reasons: First, although the concentrations of these gases are not nearly as large as that of oxygen and nitrogen (the main constituents of the atmosphere), neither oxygen nor nitrogen is greenhouse gas. This is because neither has more than two atoms per molecule (i.e. their molecular forms are O2 and N2, respectively), and so they lack the internal vibrational modes that molecules with more than two atoms have. Both water and CO2, for example, have these “internal vibrational modes”, and these vibrational modes can absorb and reradiate infrared radiation, which causes the greenhouse effect.

Secondly, CO2 tends to remain in the atmosphere for a very long time (time scales in the hundreds of years). Water vapor, on the other hand, can easily condense or evaporate, depending on local conditions. Water vapor levels therefore tend to adjust quickly to the prevailing conditions, such that the energy flows from the Sun and re-radiation from the Earth achieve a balance. CO2 tends to remain fairly constant and therefore behave as a controlling factor, rather than a reacting factor. More CO2 means that the balance occurs at higher temperatures and water vapor levels.

How much have we increased the Atmosphere’s CO2 Concentration?

Human beings have increased the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere by about thirty percent, which is an extremely significant increase, even on inter-glacial timescales. It is believed that human beings are responsible for this because the increase is almost perfectly correlated with increases in fossil fuel combustion, and also due other evidence, such as changes in the ratios of different carbon isotopes in atmospheric CO2 that are consistent with “anthropogenic” (human caused) emissions. The simple fact is, that under “business as usual” conditions, we’ll soon reach carbon dioxide concentrations that haven’t been seen on Earth in the last 50 million years

Combustion of Fossil Fuels, for electricity generation, transportation, and heating, and also the manufacture of cement, all result in the total worldwide emission of about 22 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere each year. About a third of this comes from electricity generation, and another third from transportation, and a third from all other sources.

This enormous input of CO2 is causing the atmospheric levels of CO2 to rise dramatically. The following graph shows the CO2 levels over the past 160 thousand years (the upper curve, with units indicated on the right hand side of the graph). The current level, and projected increase over the next hundred years if we do not curb emissions, is also shown (the part of the curve which goes way up high, to the right of the current level, is the projected CO2 rise). The projected increase in CO2 is very startling and disturbing. Changes in the Earth’s average surface temperature are also shown (the lower curve, with units on the left). Note that it parallels the CO2 level curve very well.

Quick Chargers are designed for conductive battery charging of the electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on board batteries.

Usually electric vehicles on board chargers have a limited power, enabling the EV to be charged at normal voltage and power ratings available in most places. Depending on the battery capacity and the charger, a complete charge takes several hours.

For occasions where a charge is needed in less time, for example in road trips where you need to keep moving, or when you find that you need to travel a distance longer than the remaining battery capacity, you would prefer to charge your vehicle’s battery in minutes, not hours.

If the recommended charging battery specifications are respected, the use of Quick Chargers does not reduce the battery life.

The DC Charging protocol, developed by the CHAdeMO association based in Japan, representing automakers, charger manufactures, utilities and other business supporters has been adopted by some major automakers. This document describes the basic CHAdeMO solution that is available in the market.

The AC Charging protocol is developed by European leading automakers and IEC.

Eşarj offers a DC charging solution, certified by CHAdeMO, also an AC output compliant to the IEC AC standard.

From the user point of view, the Esarj Quick Charger consists of a user interface module and an output DC / AC cable. The connection with the energy distribution grid is three phases.

The user interface allows the management system to validate the user ID and accept the login.

The Quick Charger manages safely the DC charge under the CHAdeMO protocol.

The CHAdeMO protocol assures full safety to the Users against direct and indirect contacts.

The charging operation is performed by the Esarj Quick Charger but the current rate and the charging progress is managed by on board battery Control Unit.

The output DC cable has a JEVS G105 plug at the cable end connecting power and communication lines between the EV and the Esarj Quick Charger.

The user identifies himself to the Esarj Quick Charger through a Calypso contactless card. Additionally and for security reasons, user must login with a PIN to complete the identification process. For private operations, the card functions can be disabled.

Only after user authorization Esarj Quick Charger is able to proceed to the charging operation irrespective of being online with a management center or offline.

In case of negative user identification, no action can be performed and the charger remains in standby.

For user safety reasons neither the charging plug nor the EV quick charge connector has voltage in the power pins until the beginning of the charging process, which is fully managed by the vehicle/charger communication.

Once finished, the battery charging plug remains blocked in the EV socket. To remove it, user must identify himself to the Esarj Quick Charger and command the plug to release and complete the charging process.

The user can easily interrupt the charging process at any time.

The interface used with the CHAdeMO protocol has signal lines wired to maintain communication between the charger and the vehicle (CAN communication / JEVS G104). Such wirings are common to all vehicles and chargers compliant to the CHAdeMO protocol.

Charging control was implemented on a master-slave basis, whereby the vehicle asks a specified charging current value to the charger, as well as all other parameters.

The charging control processing stages are displayed during the EV charging. Information offers user an insight into the successive status of automatic charger operation, from start to end:

Charging setup in progress;

Safety check or insulation test in progress;

Charging in progress;

Charging complete;

Fault occurrences.

The Esarj Quick Charger has an integrated energy metering for billing and monitoring purpose. It uses remote IP communication via GPRS, PLC, ADSL or any other to communicate business management data and technical energy data.

Fast Charging Station Safety and Protections

People Safety – Protection against Electrical Shock

The charging system is designed to prevent users to approach the dangerous charging parts on the vehicle and charger. No voltage level dangerous to the human body appears on the connector surfaces during normal connector removal action as well as when the connector fall due to an accident situation.

Equipment Protections

The Esarj Quick Charger DC output is protected against over current, over voltage and insulation fault.

The Quick Charger output is galvanic ally isolated. The equipment is grounded and equipped with measures to electrically disconnect the charger from the electric power system in a quick manner for internal electric short circuits and ground faults. These protections have automatic reset.

A ground fault current detecting circuit operates between the ground and main circuit in order to detect ground-fault on the DC charging circuit, external wiring and vehicle.

An insulation test is conducted before charging. The test confirms whether or not there are insulation defects, short circuits, and ground-faults in the charging circuit (from the charger to the vehicle inlet). Ground-fault detection is conducted not only during the test but also throughout the charging.

The Eşarj Quick Charger is compliant with IEC 61851-1 and CHAdeMO standards.

Esarj electric vehicle normal charging station line has been developed and designed for conductive battery charging of the electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on board batteries at public access charging spots.

It’s also usual to call it as Slow Chargers, but that name comes only as opposed to the Quick Chargers performances. The Normal Charge is when the power and voltage are the ones available in a household or any low voltage installation. For an ordinary electric vehicle, it is usually enough to fully recharge the electric vehicle battery from minimum to maximum in a time, that depending on the electric vehicle, is usually less than 8 hours.

At private places any Esarj Home Charger model from our product line can replace a Normal Charger. It has similar charging rates of a single phase Normal Charger but with reduced management features.

Eşarj electric vehicle charging station is compliant with EN/IEC 61851 and has CE mark, meeting the European and Turkish Directives for safety and EMC requirements. For better understanding of electric vehicle Charging modes please consult the EN/IEC 61851-1 related section.

The Eşarj electric vehicle Normal Charger was primarily designed and developed as Mode 2, for 1st phase. Currently it has been upgraded to mode 3 operations.

The Eşarj electric vehicle charging station performing in Mode 3, Case C has attached an output power cord. At standby the power cord plug is coupled to a socket in the charger bay. There is no locking door and the plug is free to be removed. The charger has a color warning light, which shows its own operation status. An alternative design in Mode 3 operation is the use of an output socket replacing the attached power cord. The plugs or sockets are available with the J1772 or the Mennekes format.

Each Eşarj electric vehicle charging station is integrated in the Charging Infrastructure Network and the Central Management System controls its operation and status. If a charger is offline, user can still operate it although some functions cannot be accessible. Even in a power shutdown, emergency will release electric vehicle’s charging cord only to the identified user.

Each user has its own Eşarj Membership Card that allows him to use the public charging infrastructure anywhere. By default, the contactless card data model is the Calypso standard but other standards can be adopted.

The architecture of Eşarj electric vehicle charging station is highly scalable because single Central Command Unit controls the operation of up to 254 Power Satellite sockets. In the most usual design, each Power Satellite can hold up two independent outputs. Versions with different number can be built to meet customer needs.

Charger Architecture

Normal Charger was designed to have one Central Command Unit and the required number of Power Satellites, up to 254 sockets. This design option assures:

Scalability;

Low Cost;

Modularity;

High flexibility to match the local architecture requirements;

Easy installation and maintenance;

Mode 1 Charging – compliant with any vehicle;

Mode 2 Charging, case B – specific to power cords supplied with electric vehicle, by default the charger?output is currently equipped with IEC 60309.

Mode 3 Charging, case B – J1772 or Mennekes outlet socket. Any other available on request.

Mode 3 Charging, case C – power cord charger attached with J1772 or Mennekes plug. Any other available on request.

Charger Features

At each charging spot, there is a Power Satellite with wired data communication to the Central Command Unit and holding usually two independent outputs. User is warned about the electric vehicle charging status with the Satellite warning lights. The code colors Green, Blue, Orange and Red stands for Standby, Charging, Failure and Charge Ended. The Central Command Unit processes and controls system management data and the Satellite Unit controls the power related. The system has the following features:

Contactless card reader Calypso or other on request;

Keypad;

LCD Display;

Output energy metering per output;

Activity log for all operations and occurrences.

System Management

All the Central Command Units are connected to a private network provided by a telecom provider for data communication. In most cases it will be done via GPRS.

Chargers perform energy supply metering for system control and customer billing with options to use different prices from different utilities and different rates during the day. It is possible to shutdown each Normal Charger for any reason like grid shedding, failure or safety.

Emergency situations

Owning local data storage capability, the electric vehicle charging station remains operational in offline mode, allowing stand-alone operation, letting future system server synchronization. Remote and local emergency charge stopping are always possible even when the user lose his mobility card.

The available services in offline mode can be configured for each application.

Under power off emergency, the Central Command Unit has battery backup support allowing:

HMI operation;

Support electronics operation;

Card reader;

Power cut;

Bay door release for Mode 2, case B connection chargers;

Communications with central system server.

“vehicle-to-grid”

The Eşarj Chargers are fully integrated in smart grid systems, allowing the electricity utility to act on the charging real time, for load management.

In the future, the grid will be capable of bi-directionality. It depends on the smart grid technology development, standard definitions and the electric vehicle features. The Eşarj Normal Charger can be upgraded to get “vehicle-to-grid” feature.

Charging Operation

Using your own contactless Mobility Charging Card, User logins the system and requests for charging at the Power Satellite assigned to the parking place.

A PIN number is asked for user identification (optional).

After system authorization, in Mode 3 charging the output plug is always de-energized unless coupled to the electric vehicle. The charging process starts after closing it. The color of the status warning light indicates charging. On any failure in the process, the charger shutdowns the power and the warning light changes its color to emergency. In Mode 3, User simply removes the plug from the electric vehicle and couples it to the charger bay.

Electric vehicle Charging Station Safety and Protections

In Mode 3, the plug is always de-energized unless coupled to the electric vehicle.

Mode 3 charging avoids the use of Mode 2 cable because the station performs the in-cable control box functions: continuous protective earth conductor integrity checking and electric vehicle proper connection verification. Mode 3, following an indication from the charging station, controls the charging current rate.

All the protections have automatic reset, with the exception of the circuit breakers (over current and RCD), which must be done by the charging operator, for safety reasons.

The Eşarj charging station status is transmitted to the Network Management System. Alerts and warnings are provided on case of fault and the charging operator is notified.

The main advantages of electric cars are convenience and environmental benefits.

Convenience benefits of battery powered electric cars are:

A- Electric cars are simple to start compared to gas powered cars. You never really “start” the car. As long as the batteries are charged up, all the driver does is close the switch and the car is on! No more accidentally grinding the starter or waiting for the car to warm up.

B- You may need to change out the battery pack once in a while or replace a fuse, but the EV is very low maintenance. Engine repairs are almost not existent since electric motors are very reliable and long lasting. Older motors may require some work on the brushes, but not much, and hardly anything compared to the work required to keep an old gas powered vehicle to move.

C- Cheap to operate. At this time, electric cars are still expensive compared to gas powered cars. This has to do with the higher cost of relatively newer battery technologies, and the lack of real mass manufacturing of the components – economy of scale. However, the EV costs only a few cents per km to drive.

Environmental benefits:

A- EVs are cleaner than gas powered vehicles. It is argued that if the source of electricity is coal fired power plants that you are just moving the pollution from one place to another. This can be shown to be correct in some cases, but overall it is a lame attempt to resist improvement.

There is the option to switch to renewable energy sources such as wind, wave, and geothermal and solar power. In fact, it would be a good thing if EVs could force to this transformation.

Also, electric cars use energy more efficiently than gas powered cars. Gas powered cars waste about %80 of their fuel in excess heat. Electric cars use almost all of their all energy to move forward to where they are going.

B- Attitude. Electric cars help promote an awareness of conservation of resources and an attitude of gratitude for the resources we have and need to keep on keeping on.

C- Conservation of resources: electric cars have the advantage of helping in a major way to conserve existing petroleum reserves. This will help preserve lower costs to consumers and ease shocks from the pounding of peak oil.

For some reason, almost everybody that first drives an electric vehicle gets this kind of grin, smile or whatever. It has been called the EV Grin. There is something about the silent, smooth power of the electric car that just makes the driver smile.

For safety reasons, an electric vehicle user that charges at home should not be tried to connect to an inadequate outlet socket, which might not have a proper protective earth connection, cable sizing or RCD protection.

Also for safety reasons, the use of adaptors or extension cords should be avoided, and it is not allowed by the EN 61851-1 standard for electric vehicle charging.

It is also not convenient to plug the electric vehicle to an outlet socket if the user experiences power limitations of its home installation when trying to charge his car. The amount of current that the car is requesting can cause a circuit breaker to trip or fuse to blow, if other power consuming equipment is being used at the same time.

For such cases, it is recommended to install a Home Charger, where all safety aspects have been considered and the installation is carried out by a certified technician. Proper power rating should be selected for safety and long term use.

The Home Charger is the recommended unit for electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle battery charging. Its core functions are:

Verification that the vehicle is properly connected;

Continuous protective earth conductor integrity checking;

Continuous residual current detection;

Energize /de-energize of the charger output;

Selection of top charging rate.

Although an Home Charger is expected to be used mostly indoors, its outer case was designed to follow the standard IP44 as to offer a higher degree of protection. For safety reasons, all metallic parts are connected to the protective earth.

A physical key for unauthorized use prevention is available as an option for all models.

The Eşarj easy EV Home Charger can be ordered with different charging current rates. The model has a basic user interface with status warning lights for Ready, Charging or Fault.

The Eşarj enhanced EV Home Charger includes a simple user interface with a current limit dial and status warning lights. The current limit dial is rather important as some electrical home installations are rated below the optimal charging current.

Currently the state of the art for AC single phase coupling at vehicle side is the SAE J1772 plug. As far as we know this plug is universally adopted for last.

There are different possible configurations of the electric vehicle Home Charger to choose between attached cable, socket as output and plug standard like Type 1 (J1772), Type 2 (Mennekes) and Type 3 (SCAME). All models and configurations perform in mode 3 as stated in the IEC/EN 61851-1. The Eşarj electric vehicle Home Box is modular in design, capable of being upgraded or adapting new technologies.

The following optional modules can be included at any deployment stage;

Energy Meter;

Display Interface;

Uplink Smart Grid Communication;

Downlink Car Communication;

Interchangeable Plugs.

The Enhanced electric vehicle Home Charger is composed of the following modules, as stated on the Electric Functional Design.

Electronic Control Card

The microcontroller based control card, conveys all information from the outer modules, main charging control algorithm and user interface.

Charging Current Selector

Cam switch or Digital Selector, the final user/installer can set the charging current to the rated power supply.

Electrical Protections

Over current protection is assured by an AC 40A circuit breaker and a RCD <30mA for people safety are included on this equipment.

Optional Modules: Uplink Smart Grid Interface. The Home charger has an intelligent billing system, compliance to energy vendor shutdown requests and future compatibility with “vehicle-to-grid”. Downlink Car Communication Interface Additional Car Serial Communication for on board battery data acquisition, parameters display, future compatibility with “vehicle-to-grid”, etc.

The Easy Wall box is the recommended electric vehicle Home Charger for the ones that are looking for safety, comfort and simple operation.

The 5 meter attached cable allows any kind of electric vehicle park position on the parking lot irrespectively of electric vehicle socket place.

The operation is so simple as Plug & Charge. The status warning lights are Ready, Charging and Fault.
